Flames engulfed a semi-trailer Monday evening on US 62/82 between Ropesville and Wolfforth, destroying the vehicle and shutting down eastbound traffic.
Hockley County Sheriff Ray Scifres said no one was injured. He said there was a mechanical malfunction, so the driver pulled over. Then, the truck caught fire.
Scifres said he did not know how long eastbound traffic would be closed Monday night.
He said traffic was diverted through Quail Road to reach Lubbock while fire crews continued to work the scene.
A viewer said he saw the 18-wheeler catch fire shortly before 7:40 p.m. Monday.
