ROPESVILLE, Texas– An 8-year-old child has died after being involved in a two-vehicle accident involving a semi tractor-trailer and pickup truck on Thursday.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., officials responded to the crash near Ropesville at 11514 FM 41, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
According to the preliminary report, a Ford pickup truck was traveling westbound on FM 41, while a truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was stopped on FM 41 facing westbound with hazard lights activated.
The driver of the semi-trailer was lost and had stopped to find directions for where he was needing to go, the report states.
The pickup was approaching the rear of the semi-trailer and did not realize that it was stopped.
The pickup attempted to veer to the left to avoid striking the rear of the semi-trailer but was unable to avoid collision with the trailer, according to DPS.
The front right side of the pickup collided with the left rear of the semi-trailer.
The driver of the pickup, Rhett Green, 35 of Lubbock, was treated at the scene. His 8-year-old child was the passenger of the pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the report.
The driver of the semi-trailer, Kelly Ray De Luca, 55 of Delton, Florida, was not injured.
The crash remained under investigation Thursday.
The City of Meadow confirmed in a Facebook statement that Green was a volunteer firefighter and asked the community for thoughts and prayers.
