An arrest warrant accused Michael Gene Baker, 28, of aggravated assault. He was accused of shooting Steven Montgomery in July of 2017 in the 2400 block of Avenue N.
A police report said, “There have been multiple shootings in this area …”
Police were called to the Covenant emergency room for the report of a gunshot victim. Montgomery was shot in the leg, according to a police report.
Police thought there was reason to think the shootings were related to the Baker and Montgomery incident.
Montgomery did not want to cooperate with police at first but later changed his mind and gave a statement. He told police that he and Baker got into a physical fight. He told police that Baker shot him because he (Montgomery) won the fight.
Baker, incidentally, was the victim of a shooting on June 25, 2018 in the 2800 block of Avenue Q. Baker was shot in the chest according to a police press release at the time.
The injuries in June were not life threatening and a police report said that Baker was not cooperative with officers who were trying to find out who shot him.
Baker was arrested early morning on Thursday for the 2017 incident. He was held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $75,000 bond.
The arrest warrant said Baker could face enhanced penalties for two previous felony convictions.
