The following is a news release from the Slaton Chamber of Commerce:
ALL ABOARD!
Come one, come all, to celebrate the season in Slaton like never before!
The Slaton Chamber of Commerce invites the community to enjoy a “Slaton Small Town Christmas.” Slaton’s square will be brimming with holiday cheer on Saturday, December 2, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., and all of West Texas is invited and encouraged to attend.
TIS’ THE SEASON ON SLATON’S SQUARE
“The square will be lit with Christmas lights and decorated trees. We’ll have horse-drawn carriage rides, food trucks with a variety of tasty treats, and free cocoa and cider on the square. Church and school choirs will sing and a variety of musicians will be entertaining with Christmas music in the gazebo. Bands from the schools will play, people will get to vote on their favorite tree, and businesses will be open,” said Jim Andrus, President of the Slaton Chamber of Commerce.
“Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at the town square at 6:00 p.m., and they’ll head over to the caboose at the Slaton Harvey House. It’s going to be a really fun and memorable night,” he said.
THE HOLIDAY EXPRESS TO THE CHRISTMAS CABOOSE
The Polar Express train is not running this year, but Slaton will offer its own version. Slaton’s includes a free train ride, caroling, free hot cocoa and cider, Christmas stories, plus a seat on Santa’s lap in a vintage red caboose. “Who could ask for more?” asked Andrus. “We believe this fills a void in the Lubbock region for affordable, family-friendly holiday activities, and we plan to host this event every December, going forward.”
The public is invited to take a ride on the Blue Weed Special street train, which will fit anywhere from 30 to 60 people at once, to visit Santa and Mrs. Clause at the Slaton Harvey House. Children are welcome to wear their warm pajamas for a photo with Santa. Families will have the opportunity to take a picture or have a commemorative one taken and printed on-site for $5.00.
“I can’t think of a more magical place to visit Santa, the man in the big red suit, than in a big red caboose decorated with lights and garland,” said Jessica Kelly, Operations Manager of the Slaton Harvey House. “Inside the Harvey House we’ll serve free cocoa and cider and sell beautiful Christmas cookies and unique gifts. We hope everyone will stop by to have a warm drink, shop, and head upstairs for a Christmas storybook reading,” she said.
TREE DECORATING CONTEST
Businesses and families are invited to enter the tree decorating contest. Rebar trees will be constructed and installed around the town square by November 27. Entry fee is $10, and winner will choose the charity or non-profit of choice to win the cash prize. Entrants will decorate their tree in the most creative way possible before December 2, and trees will be judged by the community. To enter the contest, call or email the Chamber of Commerce at slatoncoc@sbcglobal.net.
SAVE THE DATE
Mark your calendars and bundle up for this fun, festive, family-friendly event. “We’re very excited about this,” said Kelly of the Slaton Harvey House. “Families are really going to feel the spirit of the holidays.”
“We can’t wait to spend some time with the community this holiday season. We hope everyone will show up to enjoy this night of magic and continue to make Slaton a great place to call home,” said Andrus.
TRAIN ROUTE
The Blue Weed Special street train, built and owned by Tahoka’s Leighton and Joan Knox, will run a continuous route from 6 to 9 p.m. It will depart from the Slaton Harvey House and stop at the northeast corner of the Slaton Square before traveling back to the Slaton Harvey House. It will make the round in approximately 15 minutes. Visitors will be able to get on and off the train at both locations. The train ride is free. Visitors may make a donation to the Slaton Harvey House at the “Train Depot” that evening if desired.
If families do not wish to ride the train, they are welcome to drive to the Square and Slaton Harvey House. The Slaton Harvey House is located at 400 Railroad Avenue, at the end of Texas Avenue across from Caprock Santa Fe Credit Union.
