South Plains Food Bank Offers Free Meals to Students 18 and Under

There are more that 29,000 children across the South Plains that do not know where their next meal is coming from. The South Plains Food Bank aims to bridge this gap through their “Feed Our Kids. Feel Our Future” campaign.

During the Summer the Food Bank serves more than 3,000 hot meals to kids each week day at their 30 Summer Feeding sites. Summer is winding down and so is the Summer Feeding program.

This is the last week kids can receive a free meal from the food bank. They are transitioning into their Kids Cafe program which will start on the first day of school.

The Kids Cafe is an after-school feeding program designed to combat childhood hunger. The South Plains Food Bank will provide children with a nutritious evening meal in a safe environment.

Providing children with a hot meal so they have the energy to learn and grow is a big task, but Roxanne Ancira, Director of the Feeding Programs, said they are more than happy to help.

“There’s a child out there that is not going to go hungry,” Ancira said. “At the end of the day after everything is said and done we know that we have fed at least 1,000 children.”

There are no requirements or qualifications to receive a meal for any child under the age of 18. Text “FOOD” to 877-877 to find a Kids Cafe site near you. There’s also a list of sites at www.spfb.org.
