Texas Tech University and South Plains College (SPC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) [Monday] (April 1) on a new concurrent enrollment/alternate admissions program for students not initially accepted to Texas Tech.
The MOU, formally called “Texan to Red Raider,” guarantees students admission to Texas Tech upon successful completion of program requirements.
“This partnership is distinguished by the long-standing relationship between Texas Tech and South Plains College and our close proximity that provides special pathways for students who start at SPC with the ultimate goal of enrolling at Texas Tech,” said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. “Our continued collaboration will enhance access to a college degree, benefiting both of our schools and our communities.”
In the Texan to Red Raider program, students take 12-15 credit hours at Texas Tech while simultaneously taking 39-42 credit hours at SPC. Students participating in the program also receive privileges at Texas Tech just like regular Texas Tech students, including Texas Tech athletic event privileges and access to Texas Tech’s Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center.
“This agreement will provide an additional pathway for students to enroll in and graduate from Texas Tech, which increases the access to a high-quality education,” said Melanie Hart, vice provost for eLearning & Academic Partnerships in Texas Tech’s Office of the Provost. “Although Texas Tech has partnerships with other community colleges, the close proximity of South Plains College to Lubbock makes the Texan to Red Raider partnership unique.”
With this program, Texas Tech and SPC hope to provide a smoother route for transfer students.
“South Plains College’s partnership with Texas Tech is integral to meeting the educational needs of many of our transfer students,” said Robin Satterwhite, SPC president. “This agreement will help strengthen our relationship with Texas Tech, provide a more seamless transfer process and draw more students to West Texas to attend SPC and Texas Tech.”
