Texas Tech University and The Terry Foundation have announced the names of 20 students receiving Terry Scholarships, increasing the total number of scholars in the program to 285 with projected contributions to students at Texas Tech reaching more than $15 million since 2011.
“The Terry Foundation’s annual commitment to scholarships has supported the success of many students at Texas Tech and across the state of Texas,” said Lawrence Schovanec, Texas Tech president. “We are grateful for Texas Tech’s relationship with the Terry Foundation and its continued contributions to our students and their academic success.”
The 157 Terry Scholars at Texas Tech will be awarded a projected $3,323,350 this year. The actual amount of the award will vary for each scholar depending on other aid and scholarships. More than 500 applications were received by the university for the scholarships awarded this year to 14 freshmen and six transfer students.
“We are thrilled to be able to welcome the eighth class of incoming Terry Scholars,” said Heather Medley, assistant director of Financial Aid and Scholarships and Texas Tech Terry program coordinator. “Coming from all areas of Texas and learning in every college on campus, Terry Scholars not only benefit from Texas Tech, but also aim to give back by consistently exemplifying The Terry Foundation’s pillars of scholarship, leadership, service and community.”
The Terry Foundation was established in 1986 by Houstonians Howard and Nancy Terry from a desire to help young people help themselves. The foundation’s goal is to strengthen the state of Texas by identifying, developing and supporting Texas high school graduates with high leadership potential and providing them with scholarships to attend Texas Tech and 12 other participating universities.
Terry Scholars are selected from a competitive applicant pool of incoming freshmen and non-traditional, transfer students from Texas community colleges or universities who are working toward their first bachelor’s degree. Those selected demonstrate exceptional leadership, character, financial need and scholastic ability.
