The Texas Tech University Board of Regents on Monday authorized the naming of an interim Texas Tech University System Chancellor. And the regents also authorized the chairman to announce the name of the interim chancellor “at the appropriate time.”
The regents then adjourned late Monday morning having not yet said who was chosen as the interim chancellor.
Robert Duncan is stepping down as chancellor effective August 31. Duncan had been chancellor since July 2014 and announced his retirement suddenly on August 13. Sources said Duncan lost the support of five regents because of Texas Tech’s effort to open a school of veterinary medicine.
Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp was opposed to Texas Tech having a vet school and said so very publicly.
The motion was made by regent Tim Lancaster. Lancaster said: “I move that the board approve the appointment of an interim chancellor of the Texas Tech University System under the terms and conditions set forth in the executive session and authorize the chairman to announce the appointment at the appropriate time.”
