Landmark Arts at the Texas Tech School of Art is opening three exhibits showcasing both student and professional works ranging from photography to ceramics to painting.

Casa de fruta y pan by Meg Griffiths is the first exhibition in the 2017-18 SRO Photo Gallery Exhibition Series. It will be on display from Saturday (Aug. 26) through Sept. 17 in the Landmark Arts SRO Photo Gallery, located in the sub-basement of the Texas Tech School of Art Building at 3010 18th St. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

For the exhibition, Griffiths traveled to Cuba to explore domestic life at the edge of capitalism. The intent of the exhibition is to push past preconceived notions of Cuba as a purely communist country and to gain a fuller and more intimate view of domestic and familial culture.

Griffiths earned her Master’s of Fine Arts in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design and was recently honored with the 2017 Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers for the best series in fine art photography. Griffiths also was selected as one of Atlanta Celebrates Photography’s “Ones2Watch” and one of Photo District News’ 30 New and Emerging Photographers in 2013.

Kim Timmons: Water Falls
Kim Timmons: Water Falls will be on display from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 1 as a part of the First Friday Art Trail at the Texas Tech Satellite Gallery at the Charles Adams Studio Project, located at 1108 5th St. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

This exhibition features the work of Timmons for her Master’s of Art Education degree capstone. It incorporates glass, found objects, textiles, embroidery, sewing and fabric dying.

“My subject matter represents abandonment, loneliness, and neglect,” Timmons said. “My creative process includes layering with an array of mediums. This process of creating something, destroying it, only to reassemble over and over again is a metaphor of how I have had to put my life back together after too many troubled events.”

Second Year MFA Graduate Student Exhibition
The Texas Tech School of Art will open the Second Year MFA Graduate Student Exhibition with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Landmark Gallery at the School of Art.

The exhibition will showcase new artwork by returning candidates in the Master of Fine Arts program. This artwork includes jewelry design, metalsmithing and printmaking as well as many other types of art. It displays the students’ development in creative activity after the first year and starting the second year of the three-year program.

The exhibition runs through Sept. 24. The reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.
