Texas Tech University School of Music’s first band concert of the academic year will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 21) in Hemmle Recital Hall and will feature the Concert Band and Symphonic Band under the direction of Duane Hill and Eric Allen.
The performance will explore extremes of character, from inspiration of western European dance styles to the social tension of the United States during the 1950s and 1960s.
The Concert Band will begin the night with Yo Goto’s rhapsody based on the Neapolitan song “Funiculi, Funicula” which will set a folk-tinged tone for the first half of the performance. The set also will include Brant Karrick’s “J.S. Jig” and Steve Danyew’s “Adagietto.” The Concert Band will close the set with Percy Grainger’s wind band adaptation of the English Morris-style dance tune, “Shepherd’s Hey.”
The Symphonic Band will transition into its set with John Zdechlik’s “Celebrations.” The set also will include Alfred Reed’s arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “My Jesus, Oh What Anguish.” The Symphonic Band will close the concert with Mark Camphouse’s tribute to Rosa Parks, “A Movement for Rosa.”
The concert is free and open to the public.
