Texas Tech University’s School of Theatre & Dance will present Sarah Ruhl’s “Passion Play” Feb. 5-11 in the Charles E. Maedgen, Jr. Lab Theatre, located at 2812 18th St. between Boston and Flint Avenues.
Curtain times for the 2017-18 Lab Theatre Season are 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
“Passion Play” takes audiences behind the scenes of three communities attempting to stage the death and resurrection of Jesus. The play is divided into three acts that capture times in history where political forces were blurring the lines between the church and state. From northern England in 1575 when Queen Elizabeth banned all religious plays, to Bavaria in 1934 as Hitler rose to power, to Spearfish, South Dakota, from 1969 through Reagan’s presidency, Ruhl’s exploration of devotion takes the viewer on a humorous yet unsettling journey filled with lust, whimsy and a lot of fish.
“Ruhl’s ‘Passion Play’ appeals to audiences who associate with the Christian faith and those who do not,” said Lauren Miller, third-year graduate student and director of the play. “Religion has served as a strong pillar within America since its foundation and has been the cause of much debate. America is very much a divided country, with both parties viewing the world in black and white. ‘Passion Play’ does a brilliant job of showing audiences the gray and reveals to us the importance of listening to each other and finding the middle ground of understanding.”
Tickets for “Passion Play” are $10 for individuals and $5 for students with a valid student ID. A limited number of free student rush tickets are available for Texas Tech students at the box office one hour prior to performance. More information is available online or at (806) 742-3603.
