Angel Carroll, a senior in the Department of Communication Studies in the College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech University, has been selected by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to serve a term on the Texas Juvenile Justice Advisory Board.
The board advises the Texas Criminal Justice Division on various programs and solutions to issues and submits recommendations regarding federal compliance issues and federal grant disbursements.
Carroll, a native of Georgetown, has been active in her time at Texas Tech in helping fellow and future students in their academic goals. She entered the foster care system in Texas when she was 15, bouncing between a dozen different homes in just one year. Now, she hopes to make a difference in the lives of others who may be experiencing the same thing.
“As someone who grew up in foster care and also was involved in the justice system as an adolescent, I think it’s important for our foster care and juvenile court systems to acknowledge those with lived experiences and include them in critical decisions about improving our systems,” Carroll said. “My appointment to the Texas Juvenile Justice Advisory Board has been a dream come true, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the State of Texas. It’s one of many ways I hope to be able to give back and help others.”
She currently serves on the Judicial Commission on Mental Health as a collaborative council member. She also is a member of the Texas Network of Youth Services Young Adult Leadership Council and on the Student Alumni Board for the Texas Tech Alumni Association. Previously, she served as president of the Social Work Student Organization and as a member of the National Social Work Association.
In her spare time, she volunteers with Family Promise of Lubbock and mentors young women in the Williamson County Juvenile Detention Center in her hometown.
“Ms. Carroll is an example of the hard-working students we have here in the College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech,” said Todd Chambers, associate dean for undergraduate affairs and an associate professor in the College of Media & Communication. “If you ever get a chance to be around her, you will quickly learn why she was appointed – she’s an enthusiastic professional communicator. I’m very proud of her.”
