Texas Tech student killed on I-20 in Abilene Tuesday

A 20-year-old Texas Tech student was killed when her car slammed into an 18-wheeler on I-20 in Abilene Tuesday afternoon.

Gabrielle Barajas was pronounced deceased at the scene on the crash in the westbound lanes of the interstate near the Hwy 351 overpass just after noon, according to the Abilene Police Department.

The official cause of the crash has not been determined. Police say the initial investigation indicates Barajas lost control of her car while traveling down I-20 and slid into the trailer of an 18-wheeler.

No other injuries have been reported in connection to this incident.

Texas Tech University confirmed Barajas was a Theater major at their College of Performing & Visual Arts and issued a brief statement Wednesday morning:

“We are saddened with the passing of Gabrielle Barajas and extend our heartfelt condolences to Gabrielle’s family and friends. The loss of a member of the Texas Tech University family touches us all and we hope her family can find comfort and peace during this difficult time.”
