The following is a new release from Texas Tech University:
The Texas Tech University School of Music will host a performance featuring the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 5) in Hemmle Recital Hall. Director of Bands Sarah McKoin will conduct the ensemble.
In its final concert of the semester, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform selections in preparation for its appearance at the March 2018 Southwest Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association.
In a nod to American composer and educator Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, the band will begin the performance with the overture to Bernstein’s operetta “Candide.” Next, the Mirasol Quartet, composed of current and former students from the Texas Tech saxophone studio, will perform Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Colgrass’ “Urban Requiem.” Members of the quartet are James Barger, Andrew Reinhart, Ben Still and Ben Donnell, but for this concert David Dees will stand in for Still.
The program continues with Avner Dorman’s “Fear” and “Slaughter” from the young Israeli composer’s “Ellef Symphony.” The pieces are based on Jewish poetry from the past millennium and render feelings associated with wartime and hope for the humanity of the current millennium. Ryan Smith, Texas Tech alumnus and Lubbock Christian University band director, arranged the pieces for wind band from their original orchestra arrangement.
The concert concludes with the energetic dance-hall spirit of Mexican folk songs in a band version of Aaron Copland’s “El Salón México.”
