Sixth annual Robert Burns Supper

EVENT:
Texas Tech University will celebrate the life and legacy of poet Robert Burns with the sixth annual Robert Burns Supper. The event is common in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and there has been a surge in celebrations of the 18th-century Scottish poet laureate in the U.S. in recent years.
The event is fashioned after an annual ritual that began in Scotland in 1801 on or near Burns’ birthday (Jan. 25). The Lubbock event will include a prime rib dinner and samples of Scotch whisky, readings of Burns’ poetry, storytelling and traditional Scottish music performances by Ed Miller, Scooter Muse and Jil Chambless.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with a ceremony known as “Piping in the Haggis” and “The Selkirk Grace,” a prayer attributed to Burns.
Approximately 3 percent of Lubbock’s population is of Scottish heritage, which has created an enthusiastic community of people who enjoy participating in this unique cultural event.
The event is open to the public age 21 and over, and traditional Scottish attire is encouraged. Tickets cost $68.75 per person and can be purchased in Lubbock at United Supermarkets, Dollar Western Wear, Ralph’s Records or through Select-A-Seat while supplies last.
The program is made possible in part through a grant from the City of Lubbock, as recommended by Civic Lubbock, Inc.
