Panel discussion to coincide with the first Women Veterans Day in Texas.

Helen Devitt-Jones Auditorium, Museum of Texas Tech University, 3301 Fourth St. Attendees may park near the west entrance of the museum.
EVENT:
On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act into law, which enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces. On June 9, 2017, the 85th Texas Legislature established June 12 as Women Veterans Day to recognize the role of women in the military forces and to commemorate the sacrifices of and valor displayed by Texas women veterans.
In celebration of the first observance of Women Veterans Day, Texas Tech’s Military & Veterans Programs, the Museum of Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Office of Student Services Veterans and Military Advising will host a panel discussion featuring women veterans. The panelists will discuss their military experiences, offer advice to future female service members and speak on the importance of community awareness of women veterans.
The featured panelists are:
- Sgt. Missy Helbert, U.S. Marine Corps (retired); lead transfer adviser, Texas Tech Undergraduate Admissions
- Maj. Gen. Dr. Annette Sobel, Arizona Air National Guard and colonel, U.S. Army (retired); associate professor, Department of Medical Education, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center; director, Global Laboratory for Energy Asset Management & Manufacturing (GLEAMM); adjunct professor, electrical and computer engineering, Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering
- Petty Officer 2nd Class Alicia M. Lopez, U.S. Navy (active), Texas Tech counselor education doctoral candidate
- Senior Airman Elizabeth Contreras, U.S. Air Force (active), Cannon Air Force Base
- Tech Sgt. Denise Estenson, U.S. Air Force (retired), Women Veterans Program Member, Lubbock Veteran Affairs; Honor Flight Network, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans
Lubbock’s American Legion Post 575 will host a reception following the panel discussion. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
