Texas Tech University has once again been recognized as a leader among the world’s universities, ranking in the top 3 percent of the 18,000 institutions evaluated in the 2018-19 Center for World University Rankings list.

Texas Tech jumped 63 spots, from the No. 500 spot in 2017 to No. 437 this year, in the rankings announced this week. The university also is ranked No. 126 among universities in the U.S. and No. 75 among U.S. public institutions.

“Texas Tech continues to gain increasing recognition for the quality of its academic programs and scholarship,” said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. “Inclusion in this list of top institutions recognizes Texas Tech’s reputation as a leader in higher education and its growing global stature.”

The Center for World University Rankings does not rely on surveys or university data submissions, but instead uses seven objective indicators to rank universities:

  • Quality of education, which is measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have won major international awards, prizes and medals;
  • Alumni employment, which is measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held CEO positions since 2011 at the world’s top 2,000 public companies;
  • Quality of faculty, which is measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes and medals;
  • Research output, which measured by the total number of research papers published during the last 10 years;
  • Quality publications, which is measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier science, social science and humanities journals;
  • Influence, which is measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journal; and
  • Citations, which is measured by the number of highly-cited research papers.

This year’s rankings list used an enhanced methodology, with research accounting for 70 percent of the total score. In 2017, just one year after the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education placed Texas Tech in its “Highest Research Activity” category, the university had a record $185 million in total research expenditures. Texas Tech is among the top 115 overall research universities in the U.S., one of just 81 public institutions to achieve this classification. The university also is one of just 12 of those institutions to achieve status as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

The university also ranked No. 363 in citations, No. 416 in quality publications, No. 423 in research output and No. 448 in alumni employment.

“These rankings demonstrate Texas Tech’s commitment to investing in innovative research, and to the ongoing success of our faculty, staff, students and alumni,” Schovanec said. “This is an outstanding achievement that truly shows, from here, it’s possible.”
