The following is a news release from Texas Tech University:
The Texas Tech University School of Music, housed within the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, is hosting the 42nd annual Scholarship Concert, SCORE (Scholarship Concert Offering a Remarkable Evening) at 7:30 p.m. April 28 at the Broadway Church of Christ auditorium, 1924 Broadway Ave.
The concert celebrates all those who donate to School of Music scholarships as well as all music student scholarship recipients. All proceeds from this annual event will help the Friends of Music at Texas Tech to fund future scholarships for students in the School of Music.
The concert will feature student performers from the Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra and all four of the School of Music’s choirs: the University Choir, Women’s Chorale, Matador Singers and University Singers.
Philip Mann, director of orchestral studies and professor of practice in the School of Music, will begin the concert by conducting the University Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18. The performance features William Westney, who is a Paul Whitfield Horn professor and the Eva Browning artist-in-residence, as a guest piano soloist.
After a brief intermission, Alan Zabriskie, director of choral studies and associate professor of music, will lead the University Choir and the University Symphony Orchestra together in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, K. 626. This performance features soloist Rebecca Hayes, a soprano and assistant professor of voice; Alice Anne Light, a mezzo and assistant professor of voice; Karl Dent, a tenor and professor of voice & choral studies; and Gregory Brookes, a baritone and an assistant professor of voice.
The concert is presented by Friends of Music, the primary patron group of the Texas Tech School of Music, and generously supported by City Bank. Through multiple annual events, Friends of Music contributes regularly to providing much-needed scholarship support to music students.
General admission tickets to the concert are $25. The concert will be free to Texas Tech students with valid ID and children under the age of 12. Tickets for the concert are available either at the door prior to the performance, or at the School of Music’s website.
A reception immediately following the performance is complimentary with a concert ticket. Attendees are encouraged to meet the musicians at the Broadway Church of Christ Terrace and can take advantage of the opportunity to donate to the Friends of Music at Texas Tech scholarship fund.
Prior to the concert, a special Prelude Party will kick off the evening at 5:30 p.m. This private party features wine, hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to meet some of the faculty participating in the concert. A ticket to the Prelude Party, which includes a ticket for the concert and reception, costs $100. Space is limited.
