Lubbock Meals on Wheels on Thursday announced record-breaking results from the 2017 Easy as Pie fundraiser.  The money helps MOW deliver more than 700 meals every day to people who are home-bound.

“Lubbock Meals on Wheels receives no government funding and we are not a United Way agency,” MOW said. “We rely completely on private funding and the Lubbock community.”

The final tally was $85,946.58.  By the way, KLBK’s Jon Hansen won the pie eating contest on November 10 to kick off the fundraiser.

Here is the full text of MOW’s statement:

For the 26th consecutive year, Lubbock Meals on Wheels partnered with Mrs. Smith’s, United Supermarkets, KAMC, and KLBK, for the “Feed a Friend – It’s as Easy as Pie” fundraiser. Lubbock Meals on Wheels receives no government funding and we are not a United Way agency. We rely completely on private funding and the Lubbock community. We currently prepare, package, and deliver over 700 meals each day. As our community continues to grow, the need for our services also grows.

Thanks to the hard work of the checkers and managers at United Supermarkets over 350 volunteers, our sponsors, and the generous Lubbock community, we raised a record breaking, $85,946.58. This translates to 17,189 meals, helping people remain at home, well fed, and independent.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all of those who were kind enough to donate and volunteer during this event and to The United Family managers, checkers, and staff. Thanks to Mrs. Smith’s, The United Family, KLBK, and KAMC for sponsoring this annual event. We appreciate all of the radio stations that helped promote our fundraiser. It wouldn’t be the same without the annual pie eating contest and all of those fun-loving contestants. Congratulations to this year’s pie eating winners, Jon Hansen, KLBK evening anchor and Tim McCullar, store director at the newest United Supermarket at 4th and Milwaukee! We are extremely grateful for this support from our generous community which helps us fulfill a significant need in our community and serves as a reminder of the true reason for the season.

Merry Christmas and Season’s Greetings to all!
