LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) – The following is a news release from the Lubbock Tornado Memorial Gateway Project

The Lubbock Tornado Memorial Gateway committee will unveil the project design and lead gifts to fund a memorial for the victims of the May 11, 1970, tornado. The project is designed to pay tribute to the victims, while also recognizing the community leaders and the spirit which rebuilt the community.

Located on City of Lubbock property at Avenue Q and Glenna Goodacre Boulevard, the memorial will be completed by the 50th anniversary of the tornado on May 11, 2020.  In addition to creating a beautiful gateway into the downtown area, the memorial will provide a place to educate future generations and visitors about the tornado and its impact on Lubbock’s history.

A survivor of the 1970 tornado will share her story of loss and a community which supported her family. In addition, representatives from organizations providing the lead gifts will be present.
