Traffic accident leads to ethanol spill in Plainview early Tuesday morning

PLAINVIEW, Texas – A traffic accident led to a hazmat response for a chemical spill early Tuesday morning in Plainview.

The Plainview Fire Department was dispatched to a rollover involving 18-wheeler around 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of West 5th Street and Columbia Avenue.

According to a news release from PFD, approximately 2,500 gallons of ethanol spilled out of the tanker.

As a precaution, fire department personnel set up a 1,000-foot exclusion zone.

Fuel from the overturned tanker was off loaded to another tanker called to the scene.

Several businesses in the exclusion zone area were evacuated or not allowed to open Tuesday morning.

Columbia Street from 3rd Street to 5th Street was closed until the hazmat crews cleaned up the spill and dirt used to dam the spill.

No injures were reported, according to PFD.

The public was asked to avoid the area if possible. Traffic was being diverted.
