Traffic Accident Wednesday Afternoon Shuts Down Portion of U.S. Highway 87

Emergency crews were dispatched to a two vehicle accident just outside the Lubbock city limits Wednesday afternoon.

According to the DPS, the driver of a Dodge Magnum failed to yield the right of way while merging onto U.S. Highway 87.


The driver of a crane truck, 74-year-old Morton Watley, took evasive action, however, both vehicles collided. The crane truck went into the center median and turned over on its side.

Inside the Dodge Magnum was 61-year-old Shenova Williams, 32-year-old Victoria Williams, and three children of the ages of 1, 11, and 14.

The five people inside the Dodge Magnum as well as the crane truck driver were taken to University Medical Center all with non-incapacitating injuries.

U.S. Highway 87 was shut down in both directions just south of 82nd Street. North and southbound traffic was diverted on the frontage roads.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock Fire Rescue, Woodrow Volunteer Fire Department, UMC EMS and the Texas Department of Transportation all responded to the accident. 

Victoria Williams was the driver of the Dodge Magnum and received citations for driving with an invalid license and failing to yield the right of way.
