The Texas Tech University School of Music will host a performance featuring the Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 28) in Hemmle Recital Hall. Duane Hill, associate director of bands in the School of Music, and graduate conducting student Skye Brown will direct the band.
This concert’s theme is derived from the work, “A Thousand Passions,” composed by South Carolinian band director Joshua Hinkel. The piece will be the midpoint of the evening’s program.
Two works for wind ensemble by acknowledged luminaries of the wind band medium will open the performance. First, the band will perform Ron Nelson’s wind band transcription of his orchestral overture, “Savannah River Holiday.” Brown will take the podium to lead the band through the five-movement “Serenade for Band” by Philadelphia piano and organ prodigy Vincent Persichetti.
Two sets of pieces will comprise the second half of the band’s program. The first set begins with three works by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. The set begins with whimsical and sardonic “March” from Shostakovich’s “Jazz Suite No. 2” and then transitions into the “The Fire of Eternal Glory,” which was commissioned by the city of Novorossiysk for its war memorial in Heroes Square. The set ends with the “Folk Festival” movement from a suite of music derived from Shostakovich’s ballet “The Gadfly.”
The concert concludes with the second set consisting of two works by wind band composer John Mackey. The first selection is “This Cruel Moon,” a movement from his recently-composed “Wine-Dark Sea: Symphony for Band,” which musically tells the Homerian epic “The Odyssey.” The Concert Band will end its program with “Lightning Field,” which gets its name from an art installation by Walter De Maria in the New Mexico desert.
The concert is free and open to the public.
