Lubbock Police arrested two drivers Thursday evening who were charged with racing on a highway.
Keyhan Travis Moradi, 23, of Wolfforth was charged with racing (class B misdemeanor), reckless driving, and endangering a child (state jail felony). Travis Tyrn Reiss, 21, of Lubbock was charged with racing (class B misdemeanor) and reckless driving.
A police report said an officer was on patrol in the 6300 block of 82nd Street at about 8:50 p.m. when he saw the two drivers, both in Mustangs, driving east side-by-side “at a high rate of speed.”
“I believed that they might be racing so I turned my patrol vehicle around eastbound to attempt to catch up,” the officer wrote in the police report.
“I observed at approximately 8700 Quaker both vehicles accelerating in a competitive attempt to outdistance each other,” the police report said.
The officer turned on lights and sirens in the 9600 block of Quaker. Two police officers working together got Moradi and Reiss stopped in the 4400 block of Quaker.
“I believed that both vehicles, due to them racing on a highway at high speed and multiple lane changes during a busy traffic hour, to be operating with a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property,” the police report said.
In Moradi’s vehicle, police noticed a child “not in the proper child restraint.” The age of the child was not listed.
Moradi was held Friday in the Lubbock County Detention Center on bonds totaling $5,500. Reiss was held on bonds that totaled $3,000.
NOTE: The police report said the traffic stop was made in the 4400 block of Quaker. However, the police report also makes mention of a restaurant which would be in the 4400 block of 98th Street. We have asked for clarification.
