The following is a news release from TxDOT:

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is set to begin work on a project that will make major improvements to US 385 in Hockley County. The $7.4 million project will completely rebuild the existing roadway from a two-lane roadway to a five-lane thoroughfare.

Project limits are:

  • US 385 – from FM 300 to 1.86 miles south of FM 300
  • FM 300 – 203 feet south of 13th Street to 91 feet north of 13th Street.

Construction work on the project is scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 1. Contractor Allen Butler Construction, Inc., of Lubbock, is scheduled to begin setting traffic barriers next week, said Steve Perez, P.E., TxDOT Littlefield Area engineer.

“We’re reconstructing a roadway next to the community’s busiest events center and we know construction is going to have a major impact on local traffic,” Perez said. “Our goal is to make sure we get the work done in the safest and most efficient way possible.”

Motorists should anticipate various lane closures and detours on both US 385 and FM 300 throughout construction, Perez said.

“Motorists will encounter lane closures, detours and even reduced speed limits at various times during construction and throughout the work zone,” Perez said. “Drivers can also expect slow moving traffic and delays and are advised to seek alternative routes around the construction zone.”

Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone, since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic and should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.
  •
  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
  •
  • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

The project is anticipated to be completed in early 2020.
