A new phase of work is set to begin [this] week on a project constructing a new US 62 bridge at Hackberry Creek in Motley County.
On Tuesday, March 12, contractor Hodges & Son Construction Company will begin work to construct the “tie-ins” to connect the existing roadway alignment to the newly constructed roadway alignment and approaches to the bridge.
During this phase, traffic will be reduced to one lane, with two-way traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals. The rest area located in the construction zone will also be closed to traffic during this time.
“Extended lane closures are planned during this phase of construction with US 62 reduced to one lane and traffic flow controlled by portable, timed traffic signals,” said Matt Herbstritt, P.E., Childress Area engineer. “The temporary traffic signals will function similarly to intersection traffic lights, with requirements to stop and wait on a red light display and to proceed with caution upon a green light indication,” Herbstritt said. “Under no circumstances should motorists proceed through the work zone when a red light is displayed.”
Motorists are urged to slow down, use caution, and be prepared to stop when approaching the work zone from either direction. TxDOT also reminds travelers to always use caution throughout the work area as workers may be present.
This phase of the project is expected to last approximately two months, weather permitting. Once the “tie-ins” are complete, traffic will return to two-lane, two-way operation across the newly constructed bridge and approach roadway. Once the new roadway and bridge are in service, the old bridge will be demolished, and the terrain will be graded to the final slopes.
Overall completion of the project is planned for summer 2019.
