The following is a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation:

Motorists traveling southbound US 87 this week should expect traffic changes as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continues work on a $7.34 million project to make roadway improvements to more than three miles of US 87, from 82nd Street to FM 1585.

Beginning Monday, March 19, Allen Butler Construction crews will start work to mill and repave the southbound US 87 mainlanes. This work will require crews to reduce southbound 87 traffic to one-lane through the work zone. Repairs to the bridge decks and replacing guardrail are also part of the planned work.

Motorists should expect slow moving traffic and are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone, since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic and should keep the following tips in mind:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones.
  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
  • Be patient. Delays from roadway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone.

Message boards advising motorists of the traffic change are posted. The work is scheduled to continue through mid-May and will take place weather permitting.
