Volunteers placed more than 4,000 flags on gravesides of local veterans in preparation for Memorial Day.
An estimated 1.3 million Americans have died while protecting our freedoms, and dozens of volunteers showed up at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery to honor those brave men and women.
For some, it was a chance to remember a loved one, while others just wanted to find a way to pay tribute to those who fought for their country.
Benny Guerro, Commander of the Lubbock chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars said placing the flags is a way to remind everyone of the true meaning behind Memorial Day.
“Just take a moment to pause and realize that you are having a great time this weekend because there is men and women who have died defending your freedoms,” Guerro said. “I hope you realize that while you were playing Frisbee on the beach, there was men and women who stormed the beaches of Normandy and fought at Iwo Jima so that we could be free.”
