LUBBOCK, Texas — The City of Lubbock scheduled a press conference for Monday at 11:30 a.m. via Internet teleconference.

City of Lubbock Director of Public Health, Katherine Wells said there have been 68 new cases in the last week in Lubbock and Lubbock County which is half the number of new cases the week before.
“We need the public to stay the course,” Wells said. It’s working, she said of social distancing measures to slow the spread of COVID-19.
As of Sunday, there were 499 total cases with 40 deaths and 166 recoveries.
Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said LPD has issued 39 COVID-19 citations and Lubbock Fire Rescued issued 11 in addition to LPD cases. The chief spoke about a number of categories of crime that were slightly up or slightly down when comparing 2020 with 2019.
However, one category of crime really stood out. To date, there have been 16 homicides for 2020. Mitchell described that as a significant increase for this year as there were 16 homicides for all of the last year.
Mitchell said for the 2020 homicide cases, officers have identified a suspect for every case except one. Mitchell did not say to what extent homicides might be related to COVID-19 or the Stay Home orders during COVID-19.
