The Texas Department of State Health Services on Monday confirmed Hockley County’s first human case of West Nile virus.
Chris Van Deusen, director of media relations with the department, said the virus was detected in someone who was a blood donor.
It is unclear if the person contracted the virus through a mosquito or even in Hockley County. He said it could have been contracted elsewhere.
Van Deusen said it is not a cause for concern in Hockley County.
However, he said it served as a reminder that mosquito season is not over yet.
West Nile virus can be deadly. To avoid the spread of the virus through mosquitoes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend applying insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and dumping out standing water.
