A Lubbock woman, Dani Guerra, heard a commotion near her apartment. An SUV was partially submerged in the playa lake at 74th Street and Elgin Avenue on Monday morning.
“I heard somebody screaming, and I look over, and there’s a car in the pond,” Guerra said. “I ran downstairs, and I grabbed my neighbor, and I said, ‘Call the cops!’”
“I got here and I jumped in the water,” Guerra said. “But there was nobody here.”
A man was seen running from the SUV according to police. It turns out, he escaped from the SUV and ran back to his apartment to get help.
But Guerra didn’t know that when she jumped into the playa lake. She was still wet when she spoke to a photojournalist at the scene.
“I didn’t care at the time,” Guerra said. “The guy was screaming his head off. I felt bad because I thought ‘Oh my God, he’s trapped.’”
“I just got in the water. I didn’t even think,” Guerra said.
On Monday afternoon, police said, “The subject advised our officers that he had been fishing for about 3.5 hours with the vehicle backed up to the playa lake.”
Police also said, “The subject decided to leave and when the subject put the vehicle in drive, it began to slide into the lake.”
No injuries were reported.
