Local Organization Offers Free Meals to Those in Need

The 100 Black Men of Lubbock sponsored a free Thanksgiving feast at the Bridge of Lubbock Friday afternoon to give support for those in need during the holiday season.

“It’s just wonderful to see the people in the condition that they are, some have problems and disabilities, some that come in wheelchairs and people have to lead them again,” Bridge of Lubbock Volunteer Rosie Wilson said. “At least they can say if they don’t have a family, they can at least say, well we had a good meal today.”

“It strengthens the community just because it puts you together,” Bridge of Lubbock Director Whitney Owen said. “It puts you in a place where you have to talk to other people and maybe encourage others as they encourage you.”

About 100 people in need benefited from Friday’s meals, thanks to the donations of the sponsors and local residents.

“People don’t realize how many people we have in Lubbock that’s in need of help,” Wilson said. “As many places as we have that people can go to, it’s still not enough.”

Wilson said the Bridge of Lubbock is always accepting donations of canned food items, blankets, and clothing.

“It’s close to where the homeless people are,” Wilson said. “They can walk over here and get food, clothes, especially clothes that they need, especially coats, hats, blouses, dresses, all that good stuff.”

They said the Bridge is expected to have a similar celebration closer to Christmas.
