Locals Celebrate International Women’s Day

Women across the country boycotted work Wednesday for A Day Without A Woman on International Women’s Day.

Texas Tech’s Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance had another way of raising awareness.

“Even though it’s International Women’s Day, we need to recognize that what happens globally affects us locally, and vice versa,” Women’s Studies Supervisor Tricia Earl said.

Earl added that today’s pledge was for equality, and a day to wear red in support of feminists worldwide.

“Pledging for parity means that I will do what I can in my daily life to make sure that equity and equality are there for all.”

“There’s women that are not being paid equally for the work they do, in corporate or a grocery store, all women in the workforce are not paid equally or seen as equal,” Senior Destiny Molina.

“Little micro-agressions to people taking actions on sexist behavior, it’s as simple as saying, ‘Hey that’s not cool, we’re not gonna do that, or not say that,'” FMLA President Annika Conrick said, “And sometimes a little humility will really change people’s behavior.”

Earl said there is still room for progress.

“Women hold up half the sky, we are half the population, and as progress has been made throughout the women’s movement, women have become prominent in the workforce, they’ve been prominent in home life and if we are not visible, then it makes an impact.”

Even though the Women’s Studies Department at Texas Tech was filled with women, it wasn’t just women coming out to show their support.

“To me, it just means standing in solidarity with women, and understanding where they come from and seeing the history that we aren’t taught, about where women are in their place, and how we have gotten to this point where we’re at now,” Sophomore Parker Reyes said, “And understanding that women have always had a seat at the table, even when it’s been perceived that they didn’t, and I think that’s important too.”
