Los Hermanos Familia of Lubbock is proud to announce that 23 men and youth were nominated in 12 categories of the 3rd Annual “Adelante Awards”. A recognition program showcasing and honoring these Hispanic men in the Lubbock community, who excel in their careers and volunteer efforts, will be recognized tonight Friday, May 5, 2017.
“We are extremely proud of the collection of men and youth nominated,” said Christy Martinez-Garcia, Chair of the Adelante Awards Banquet.
Martinez-Garcia announced the following men and youth nominated in 12 categories. They are: Athletics Supporter: Ramiro Antonio Hernandez. Business: Dr. Gregory Marin. Church: Pedro Hernandez, Father Martin Pina, Armando Lopez Rodriguez, and Father Raymundo Manriquez. Civic/Volunteer: Marcos Andres Blanco, Pedro Arguelles, Juan Contreras, and Jose Valenciano. Education: John Martinez, and Jeremy D. Cortez. First Responder: John Gonzalez. Military/Veteran: Benny Guerrero. Media: Ruben Vilarreal. Medical: Joehassin Cordero, M.D., and Athos Colon, M.D. Professional: Freddy Chavez. Up & Comer: Adriel Alvarez, Juan Duran, and Ryan Ramos. And for Youth (Up to 17): Xavier Gomez.
“These individuals are highly deserving, and we congratulate each one for their service and dedication to the community,” said Martinez-Garcia, adding that a blind committee reviewed each category.
In addition, Emilio Abeyta, a longtime attorney, who was the first Hispanic in West Texas elected to the Slaton ISD school board, and a community advocate will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Soaring Eagle Award will be given to a volunteer of Los Hermanos Familia. This award is given annually to a member.
She added that the Spanish word Adelante, truly describes the Hispanic men who work tenaciously for the greater good of the community, and have made, or are making an impact on past, current, and future generations and moving them forward.
The award recipients will be announced at the Adelante Awards Banquet, to be held tonight Friday, May 5 2017, at 6 p.m., at the Merket Alumni Center 2521 17th Street, in Lubbock.

The Adelante Award’s program is an initiative of Los Hermanos Familia who became a nonprofit organization in June 2014, and was established in 2008. A portion of the proceeds provide college scholarship male students. Further, LHF is now preparing for the 8th Annual “Vamos a Pescar, Let’s Go Fishing” event to be held, Saturday, August 12, 2017.
In addition, Los Hermanos Familia remind the public that they will hold the 5th Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade on Saturday, May 6, 2017 beginning at 10 a.m. on historic Broadway.
