A widowed woman told EverythingLubbock.com Sunday that she owes it all to a group of Lubbock police officers.
Sandra Thomson’s garage door was damaged in a flood last year. After an unlikely set of circumstances, the officers spent last weekend installing a new garage door for Thomson.
“Yesterday morning I was sitting and saying my morning prayer and I’ve been in a tight spot,” Thomson said.
That’s when Officer Ellison got a call saying a man was possibly stealing from the widow’s garage.
“My husband passed away in November two days before Thanksgiving, and his illness came really fast…We lost everything except our house,” Thomson said.
Between the flooding and waves from cars rushing down the busy Quaker Avenue, the garage door was broken down and in bad shape.
“I was praying at the time saying, ‘God, show me which way to go, which path am I supposed to be on,'” Thomson said, “And just as I had gotten those words out of my mouth there was a knock on the door and it was Officer Ellison.”
The officer made a phone call, and within two hours, Thomson said her garage was full of uniformed officers trying to fix the broken door. It wasn’t an easy fix.
“I started talking to some of the other guys, and we got kind of a small group together and decided that we would pitch in and buy her a new garage door to come out here and try to fix it,” Officer Mark Ellison said, “So that she would have a working garage door and she would start to feel safe again inside of her home, especially because she lives by herself.”
The group of officers and the “Project Pros” contracting group installed a brand new garage door for Sandra.
“It’s not anything that we want, you know, recognition for, we just wanted to do something nice for her and try to help her out,” Ellison said.
Thomson had a message of gratitude for the men who humbly helped her.
“If ever, as long as I live, if I can ever do anything to help you, or to make you feel better, just say so. I’m here always.”
