Lubbock’s Original Beer Run and Bash is the first 5k of its kind in these parts. This event will be strategically located in the oasis of Lubbock known as Buffalo Springs Lake. The Epilepsy Foundation Texas-West Texas is kicking off the summer with cold beer, a quick race, and good music to raise funds and awareness for our friends and neighbors affected by epilepsy.
The 3rd Annual Lubbock’s Original Beer Run will be held at the Cantina at Buffalo Springs Lake on April 30, 2016. Check-in begins at 4:30pm and the race starts at 6:30pm. Registration for this exciting, fun and friendly experience is only $45 and can be done before the event by going to www.LubbockBeerRun.com, or on the day of the event at Buffalo Springs Lake. Your registration gets you a technical race shirt, a one of a kind koozie, food and drink and great live music! There will be water, food and beer as well as live music by The Local Nobodys.
If you are not a runner or can’t make it out to the lake that day to support the event, you can still register online as a “virtual beer runner” for $50 and your shirt and koozie will be mailed to you.
Statistics tell us that 1-2% of the world population is currently diagnosed with epilepsy. That translates into 7,000 – 8,000 people suffering from seizures in the Texas Panhandle. Studies show that for Lubbock specifically, there are an estimated 3,800 people currently living with epilepsy.
Donna Stahlhut, CEO for Epilepsy Foundation Texas remarked, “The purpose of Lubbock’s Original Beer Run is to raise awareness and funds for this often misunderstood condition and to remove the misconceptions often associated with individuals and families living with epilepsy. Beyond the medical aspects of therapy and pharmaceuticals to manage or control seizures, those with epilepsy are affected in very basic, real ways. Imagine as a child that you are not able to swim, take a bath or join a sleepover – things many of us take for granted. As part of our work, we provide West Texas children with these joys and experiences via our weeklong, no-cost, supervised camps.”
The Epilepsy Foundation Texas relies on the support of the community to provide services to Texans struggling with the heartbreak of seizures. The Foundation provides medical care and prescription assistance to uninsured adults, pro bono legal services, and a variety of support groups. Furthermore, seizure recognition and first aid education and training are made available in area schools and community organizations. In addition, more than 300 children and teens diagnosed with epilepsy are able to attend one of the Foundation’s three week-long residential summer camps provided to families coping with this expensive medical condition.
All programs and services are offered at no cost to families. One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in the United States, making it more common than cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease combined. It’s very likely that you know someone that has had a seizure at some point in their life. Please join us today and help us lead the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy. For more information, visit our website at www.eftx.org.
