Juneteenth is the celebration of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June of 1865.

While states across the country celebrate Juneteenth Day, Texas is the only state that made it a holiday.

Unified Juneteenth Day of Lubbock took over taken responsibility for the Hub City area six years ago.

“Just like 4th of July and Cinco De Mayo, it’s a celebration of freedom,” Unified Juneteenth President Latrice Godfrey said. “Freedom for all. Because we all deserve to be ho we choose to be. And it has a lot to do with the freedom of education. To go out and be an individual that makes a difference.”
