A well-known general counsel of Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and an accomplished LCU senior will both speak at LCU’s undergraduate commencement ceremonies, where a total of 202 undergraduate students will graduate.

The undergraduate ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Rip Griffin Center (26th & Chicago).

The headline speaker for undergraduate commencement, Augustin “Augie” Rivera, Jr., is the general counsel for the Del Mar Community College District, where he serves as a member of the President’s Executive Team. A native of Driscoll, Texas, Mr. Rivera is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1988.

This year’s student speaker, Samantha Torrez, history major, was a member of the first LCU student development board. The student development board allows student’s the opportunity to create a proposal of a project on campus that they are passionate about, and then present those to selected local businesses with the purpose of raising funds for that project.

When given the task, Torrez remembered her story coming to LCU. She credits it to the generosity of so many donors making it financially possible through scholarships. “There are not many scholarships out there for students entering into humanities, so the ones that I got I was so thankful for,” she said. “So when the opportunity came up I knew what I wanted to do, pay it forward.”

Through the development board and with her faculty mentor, in her junior year of college, Torrez was able to complete her goal in creating a $10,000 endowed scholarship in the name of Ruth Ross, her grandmother who passed away her freshmen year of high school.

“I was very excited when I found out I had reached my goal. I know that this will help other students entering into the humanities department receive a great education at LCU,” said Torrez.

The graduate ceremony will take place on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in the McDonald Moody Auditorium where the headline speaker will be Dr. Michael Hardin, associate professor of graduate and undergraduate behavioral sciences at LCU. There will be a total of 58 students graduating.

Both 2016 commencement ceremonies are being webcast live at LCU.edu/live.
