Lubbock County Democratic Party Chair Marjorie Reynolds submitted her intent to resign from her position, effective December 15, 2016.

Reynolds, who was elected in the March primary, took the title in June.

In a seven-page letter to Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa, Reynolds wrote of a number of challenges in her path, adding that she was “choosing to do what I think is best for the Party and what I think is best for the over four thousand Lubbock County Democrats who voted for me.”

“I found out that it was going to be impossible for me to be effective. There were certain obstacles that were being placed in my way, and if I can’t do my job, then I can be maybe more effective out of that position,” Reynolds explained to EverythingLubbock.com.

Reynolds stated that she set several goals for the party, which were not met. She claimed a main source of the trouble was a lack of support from local Democrats.

“I tried to put [the goals] into [place], start getting [constituents] on their way to reach the goals by putting them in print, talking about them, and it seemed that a few people didn’t want to hear about them, didn’t want to participate,” she said.

“I’m disappointed, tremendously disappointed,” she stated.

According to the Lubbock County Elections Office, Reynolds won 51.08% of the 8,083 votes cast. Attorney Charles Dunn received 48.92% of the vote.

Dunn declined a request for comment, but stated that the situation was “unfortunate.”

“There seemed to be a little evidence that [local Democrats] wished somebody else had become county chair,” Reynolds said.

She explained that she was not finished politically, stating that she plans to focus her attention to the upcoming legislative session in Austin.

“One of the top issues is school vouchers,” she said. “I’d like to join the ‘army’ to oppose those school vouchers. if they need me, I’m ready to sign on.”

A call to the Lubbock County Elections Office about a possible special election or appointment of a replacement was not immediately returned.
