Several attendees of a concert in Lubbock on Sunday night said they were accidentally overcharged for concessions, some as high as two-dozen times.
Some people who attended the Rock and Worship Roadshow concert at the United Supermarkets Arena at Texas Tech on Sunday night said concession stand purchases were duplicated numerous times on bank statements.
Kristin Miller took her two daughters to the concert, and bought drinks totaling $10.
“My bank account was charged $260 for those two drinks. The account was charged 26 times for the debit,” Miller said.
Soto was not alone. Jeremy Fortenberry purchased 3 sodas for $17 at the show. He said his bank account was charged 15 times for the purchase.
Alicia Gamez also attended the concert. She claimed her bottle of water that cost $5 was charged 13 times to her credit card. She said she discovered the issue when she tried to buy food at another location after the show later that night.
“My card was declined after the concert. I called the bank but there was nothing they could do,” Gamez said.
Cindy Harper, Associate Director of United Supermarkets Arena, said the appropriate groups had been notified of the problem and were working to resolve it.
“It’s been brought to our attention that there have been some duplication of transaction authorizations on some people’s accounts that attended the concert last night. Fortunately that’s not duplicate transactions, it’s not actual debits into the accounts,” Harper said. “We are working with our food service provider and their credit card provider as well, processing firm, to get those cleared up as quickly as possible.”
Miller said her bank froze the money in question as the amount was pending.
“The money is being tied up,” she said. “So I won’t be able to access the $260 until at least the 10th [of March] if it doesn’t go through. If it goes through, then I’ll have to go through a whole process of trying to recoup the money.”
“Of course we certainly apologize for the inconvenience,” Harper said. “We want people to come and enjoy an event and not have to worry about anything else or any concerns. Just have a great memory of the wonderful event experience, so we certainly apologize for that.”
“It’s not any type of security breach. It’s just a technological glitch that we are working through as expeditiously as possible,” Harper added.
“It’s our understanding that it’s a duplication of the authorization of a transaction, but it’s not the actual transaction,” Harper explained. “The transaction will only be processed one time. We are running through all those purchases that were made last night. Just to be sure and remove any transaction duplications as quickly as possible.”
Harper said she was unaware of any prior problems with the company, Ovations Food Services, accidentally overcharging for concessions items at events held at the arena.
“I called the bank and had to cancel my card and try to put a hold on the money but I couldn’t do it. So now it’s just to that point where it’s a waiting game,” Miller added.
“If people didn’t have the money in their accounts and they begin to bounce, this could be pretty bad for a lot of people. Luckily I had the money to cover it, so it’s not that big of a deal for me. For some people it could be a really big deal,” Miller explained. “I knew I was spending the 10, that’s no problem, but it’s kind of hard to pay $260 for some drinks.
Miller said she and others would likely have to be more careful in the future about purchases using credit or debit cards.
“Well just having the money tied up is not good…. I have a light bill due next week, so that’s kind of a big issue. That’s pretty much my light bill money, so it’s kind of putting me at the point right now where I’m going to have to pinch and save every last dime just to make it until then, so hopefully it all gets resolved quickly,” she said.
“The provider that runs the transactions is actually looking at every single transaction that ran through the arena last night, so if you haven’t had a chance to check, we are looking at every single transaction to eliminate any duplications,” Harper explained.
“I hope that everyone gets their money back. That would be ideal, and then I hope that new measures would be put into place so that this does not happen again to anyone else,” said Miller. She explained she would be using cash the next time she attends a concert.
Calls to Ovations Food Services, and Texas Tech were directed to Harper.
People with questions about concessions purchases from the event can contact United Supermarkets Arena management by calling (806) 742-7362.
Harper said she expected the errors to be corrected by the end of the day Monday.
