At their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, January 19, the Lubbock-Cooper ISD Board of Trustees voted to name the district’s fifth elementary campus Lubbock-Cooper East Elementary School.
Lubbock-Cooper’s tradition of branding elementary campuses with their location within the district began with the opening of Lubbock-Cooper North Elementary School in 2002, which prompted the renaming of the previous Lubbock-Cooper Elementary School to Lubbock-Cooper South Elementary. Two additional LCISD elementary campuses, Lubbock-Cooper West Elementary and Lubbock-Cooper Central Elementary, were similarly named.
“After discussing several options, the Board chose to keep the tradition of a directional theme for our elementary campuses,” said LCISD Board of Trustees President Paul Ehlers. “However, considering the continued growth of the district, we will likely have to use a different naming convention in the future.”
East Elementary will be located southwest of 130th Street and University Avenue. Construction of water lines to the campus site began in December.
“This is an exciting time in our district’s history,” LCISD Superintendent Keith Bryant said.
“Lubbock-Cooper is the second fastest-growing school district in the state when measured by percentage growth relative to our enrollment in the past five years. East Elementary will help us accommodate growth and allow us to serve students in subdivisions planned near the site.”
The new elementary campus was approved by voters as part of Lubbock-Cooper’s May 2016 bond package to accommodate the district’s unprecedented growth.
“We are excited about the bright future of East Elementary and the continued success of Lubbock-Cooper ISD,” Ehlers said. “We are so grateful for the support of the Pirate community that makes it all possible.”
East Elementary School is scheduled to open in August 2018.
