The Lubbock Police Department reported that they have seen a significant decrease in DWI arrests in the past three years.

  • 2014: 716 arrests
  • 2015: 661 arrests
  • 2016: 438 arrests

LPD’s PIO, Tiffany Pelt said it could be because they implement ‘no refusal’ year round, rather than just on holidays or certain weekends.

“We do it on a daily basis here in Lubbock and people might understand that, and know that, and that might have them thinking twice before they get behind the wheel,” said Pelt.

Ride sharing apps have also grown in popularity, Uber came to Lubbock in 2014. Driver Tanya Jones said she’s been able to see the positive affect it’s had.

“People know that they don’t have to hop into their car and drive themselves home, they can take an alternative,” said Jones. “I have had more than one rider get in my car who knows they are going to go out, and they are going to have a good time and they need to get home safely.”

The Lubbock Police Department said they hope to see the numbers continue to decrease throughout the course of 2017, and for future years to come.
