LUBBOCK, TX—Thursday morning, a Grand Jury at the Lubbock County Courthouse indicted Justin Chisum for the murder of his 4-year-old daughter, Kylee Forrest.
In March, a Justice of the Peace ordered Chisum, 29, be formally examined to see if he is competent to stand trial. In the request from Chisum’s defense lawyers, it stated that Chisum has a ten-year history of treatment for mental health disorders.
Chisum was arrested for brutally murdering his daughter in his Lubbock apartment near 4th Street and Slide Road on February 1. Lubbock Police found the toddler’s body, after responding to a 911 call that there was blood on an apartment window. According to police, Chisum was found naked a few blocks away, and was then taken into custody.
Thursday, a Grand Jury decided that there was enough evidence for Chisum to stand trial for capital murder in the death of his daughter. Chisum remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
His defense team issued the following statement after he was indicted:
This case has been a terrible tragedy for a family that lost not one, but two children on February 1st. While we are disappointed that the Grand Jury chose to return an indictment for capital murder instead of a possible charge of first degree murder, we understand and respect their decision. We look forward to the day when Justin and his family will have the opportunity to tell the entire story of his twelve year battle with mental illness and the events that lead us to this place.
