Lubbock Fire Department Issues Safety Concerns on Appliance Adapters

In light of two electrical fires, Lubbock Fire Rescue issued a statement about  two-prong adapters for appliances in households.

“Window air conditioner units and other appliances that use a lot of electricity should never be plugged into adapters or extension cords. These adapters and cords can over heat and cause a fire,” LFR said.

An air conditioner unit plugged into a two-prong adapter overheated at a home located near 61st Street and Vandelia Drive sparking a fire. Steve Holland, the Public Information Officer for LFR, said it was an example of why big equipment should not be used with a two-prong adapter.

During a house fire in 2400 block of East 9th Street, a woman had to escape from a back window.

“Neither house this past weekend had working smoke detectors, which is a huge problem. We’re always telling people, please have working smoke detectors so that you can be at least alerted if something happens,” said Holland.

We have been told by sources the woman involved in the house fire on 61st Street is in intensive care at University Medical Center.
