Six Lubbock girls spent the day Monday selling baked goods, lemonade, bracelets, and household goods to raise funds for Dallas law enforcement and their families. Though Dallas is hours away, these girls were emotionally impacted by the loss of these officer’s lives.
“It made me feel really scared because I was in Dallas at that point,” said Emerson Becker who was working at the bake sale.
“It was also very sad because some people lost their families, and it wasn’t even planned,” said Ella Winton.
“It was really really scary for me because a lot of police officers died and they are the ones who usually protect us,” added Grace McKim.
These girls, ranging from elementary school to middle school age, typically host summer lemonade sales. But after hearing about the deaths of five Dallas law enforcement officers last week, they decided to use their summer tradition to benefit those who are hurting after the killings last week.
“It just helps them a lot when they get donations,” explained Ella Winton. In their first day of sales, they raised around $50, but they plan to continue sales again Wednesday starting at 10 a.m. at the intersection of 109th and Troy in Lubbock.
“I really want to pray for them that nothing else bad happens,” said Emerson Becker in a message to law enforcement officers to Dallas and across the country.
The girls continued selling in spite of triple digit temperatures, they said that working towards several good causes kept them motivated.
These girls also want a portion of their sales to go to the family of Luke Siegel, the boy who was seriously injured in a golf cart accident nearly a year ago. The girls said they attend school with Luke’s sister.
