Operation Screen Your Athlete will provide free cardiac screenings Saturday (July 23) at the Lubbock Heart & Surgical Hospital from 12-3 p.m.  People ages 12-18 can participate and they do not have to be an athlete. Lubbock Heart & Surgical Hospital is located at 4810 N Loop 289.

Participants need to bring a printed registration form from the Operation Screen Your Athlete website at operationscreenyourathlete.org as well as family and personal medical history.

Operation Screen Your Athlete is an organization created by a group of local healthcare professionals concerned with the rising number of cardiac- related deaths in teen athletes annually.  By providing free heart screenings, the organization hopes to prevent the advancement of major heart issues and diseases and spread awareness about the importance of early detection.

These screenings are offered to school-aged teens 12-18 years and are conducted by cardiologists, nurses, EMTs, and echocardiogram technicians.  The tests consist of a medical questionnaire, EKG, and limited echocardiogram if needed.  Any individual who has abnormal results will be referred to a cardiologist for further evaluation and treatment.  Participants are asked that they do not drink caffeine or energy drinks 24 hours before their screening.

For more information on how to register for the screenings, donate to the organization, or volunteer for screening events, please visit operationscreenyourathlete.org.
