Texas Tech sophomore infielder Michael Davis earned yet another honor Tuesday afternoon as he was named the National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Davis, who garnered Big 12 Player of the Week accolades on Monday, is the eighth Red Raider in school history to be recognized as the National Hitter/Pitcher of the Week. He is the first Red Raider to receive the award since Eric Gutierrez on Feb. 17 last year.

Davis led all Big 12 players with 11 RBI last week, seven of which that came in Sunday’s victory to close out a series sweep at No. 16 Oklahoma State. It marked the most RBI for a Red Raider since Chris Richburg also drove in seven runs on May 1, 2007, at Dallas Baptist.

In addition, Davis was the first Red Raider since Gera Alvarez to record at least seven RBI against a Big 12 opponent. Alvarez totaled seven RBI previously against Baylor on May 19, 2002.

Davis helped power the Red Raiders to a 15-5 run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon as he cleared the bases twice against the Cowboys, drilling a three-run double in the third inning before returning with another three-run double in the sixth. His seven RBI marked the most for a Big 12 player in a conference game this season.

The Lubbock native began the series with the game-winning RBI in Friday’s 5-1 victory over the Cowboys. His RBI single in the seventh inning was the second of two hits for Davis, who wrapped the Oklahoma State series with a .500 average (6-for-12) to go along with a team-leading nine RBI.

Davis also knocked in a pair of runs, including the game-winner, in Tech’s 8-4 victory at No. 5 Florida State last Wednesday. It was the first of three game-winning RBI for Davis over Tech’s five-game road trip.

The series sweep of Oklahoma State improved Tech to 11-1 in Big 12 play, its best start to league action in school history. The sweep marked Tech’s first against a ranked opponent since the 2002 season and its first ever in a road series at a top-25 Big 12 team.

The 10th-ranked Red Raiders begin a five-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon as Tech will host Sam Houston State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
