Lubbock created new jobs in the last year according to numbers released Friday by the State of Texas. Lubbock tied Amarillo for the lowest unemployment rate in Texas at 3.4 percent.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, Lubbock had 152,500 people with a job in January as compared to 149,500 in January of last year.
And while the number of jobs went up, so did the number of job-seekers. There were 5,500 people unemployed in Lubbock in January compared to 5,200 unemployed in January of last year.
The total certified labor force for Lubbock increased a little less than 2.1% year-over-year according to TWC.
Numbers for Lubbock were not seasonally adjusted.
Statewide the unemployment rate was 4.8 percent (or 4.9 percent without the seasonal adjustment).
“Texas employers and our talented workforce started 2017 on a high note with the addition of 51,300 jobs in January,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar.
The number quoted by Alcantar was a reference to seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs.
TWC Commissioner Ruth R. Hughs said, “Texas employers continue to strengthen the job market by expanding employment and training opportunities.”
