Over the summer, students from Lubbock Independent School District middle schools partnered with teams from Texas Tech to build hovercrafts in the Third Annual LISD/Texas Tech summer STEM challenge.
Nancy Sharp, Director of Communications for LISD, said students spent a week practicing on smaller projects before building the hovercrafts on Friday and racing them across the cafeteria flood at Coronado High School.
Students were given random supplies such as: plywood, tarps, duct tape and leaf blowers. Students were challenged to build a working hovercraft. Along the way they had to come up with solutions on how to steer and propel their craft.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
