Leroy Mitchell, 59, pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday morning and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.  He will get credit for time already spent in jail.

On April 23, 2014 police were called to a shooting in the 2600 block of Ivory Avenue.

Police in 2014 said, “During an argument that was occurring between Leroy Mitchell and other individuals Victor Hopkins intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation.”

Police said Mitchell shot Hopkins – age 41 at the time – in the chest.

Someone took Hopkins to University Medical Center in a private vehicle. Hopkins was pronounced dead a short time later at UMC.

Police obtained a warrant and arrested Mitchell in the 1800 block of East 2nd Street.

Hopkins’ family was expected to make a statement.  Check back for updates.
